When Love Becomes Memory:
What My Grandmother Taught Me About Compassion and Helping Families Through Change
Posted: February 01, 2026 by JACQUELINE MANITAROS
My grandmother, who we all called Baba, was the glue of my mother’s family.
Her kitchen was always warm. Her cooking brought everyone together. No matter what was happening in life, you could always count on one thing: Baba’s table would be full.
Some of my earliest memories are of her taking care of me as a young child. As a teenager, she would gently tease me about wearing too much blush. And as an adult, I remember sitting at a family dinner and noticing her quietly slipping cutlery into her purse.
That moment stayed with me.
That is when we realized something wasn’t right.
My grandmother had dementia.
Watching someone you love change is one of the hardest experiences a family can face. Dementia doesn’t arrive all at once. It shows up in small moments. Forgotten words. Confusion. Repetition. Over time, those moments become heavier.
For my mother and her siblings, this was heartbreaking.
Eventually, Baba needed long term memory care. Visiting meant walking through locked doors, entering security codes, and understanding these systems were there to keep her safe, even though emotionally, it was incredibly difficult.
During times like this, real estate is often the last thing on a family’s mind.
When a loved one is declining, families are focused on medical decisions, care plans, and simply getting through each day. Thinking about selling a home, downsizing, or making housing decisions can feel overwhelming.
Sometimes, people just don’t have the mental bandwidth.
That’s where I see my role.
My work in real estate isn’t just about buying and selling homes. It’s about helping people through major life transitions with patience, empathy, and care.
Whether you are selling a longtime family home, downsizing, or exploring senior focused housing options, I aim to make the process feel lighter by handling the details, explaining options clearly, and guiding you step by step.
Because behind every property is a story.
And behind many moves is a family going through change.
Losing my grandmother to dementia shaped how I view aging, family, and home. It’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about helping people during difficult seasons of life.
If you’re navigating a housing transition while caring for a loved one, you don’t have to do it alone.
I’m here to help.
